What is Multiple Sclerosis?

March 2020 Health Observance: Multiple Sclerosis Education & Awareness

March is Multiple Sclerosis Education & Awareness Month! The week of March 8 – 14 serves as the week focused on providing awareness of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). There are about 100 million people in the United States living with MS. By sharing their stories, we help people better understand life with MS and become inspired to do whatever it takes to change the world for people living with MS. This week helps to spread awareness of this disease and educate those who have not heard about or have been directly affected by MS.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease that affects the central nervous systems (CNS), which includes the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. The immune system attacks the protective layer around the nerve fibers in the CNS, called myelin. This attack on the myelin results in damaging lesions within the CNS disrupting the flow of information between the brain and body. This ‘communication breakdown’ can lead to both cognitive and physical changes.

What are Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms?

MS causes many different symptoms, including vision loss, pain, fatigue, and impaired coordination. These symptoms often affect movement due to numbness or weakness in one or more limbs, tremors, and unsteady gait.
